The ONWARD Project Presents series are hosted at The ONWARD Project offices and presentation space in Santa Monica, unless otherwise stated.

Fall, 2013

  • The ONWARD Project Stakeholders Conference in Durango, CO. Participants included Navajo Nation representative, National Park Service, Museum of Northern Arizona, Fort Lewis College, UCLA, Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, Autry Museum of the American West, Descendants of RBMVE Expedition members and Native families.

July, 2014

– The ONWARD Project Presents… Shawn Fehrenbach (VR Developer and Archaeologist), “3D Modeling of Cliff Dwellings and Desert Landscapes in Tsegi Canyon”.

– The ONWARD Project Presents… Ron Maldonado (Navajo Nation Consultant), “An Overview of the Prehistoric Past: One Man’s Perspective”.

– The ONWARD Project Presents… Harvey Leake (Descendent of Wetherill Family). “John Wetherill of Kayenta and His Quest for Protection of the Rugged Utah/Arizona Borderland Country”.

January, 2017

– The ONWARD Project Presents… Lithuania Denetso, a researcher and the granddaughter of Max Littlesalt, the Navajo guide and interpreter for the RBMVE.

February, 2017

  • The ONWARD Project Presents… Movie Matinee at the Culver Studios where historic video segments from the 1930’s Expedition, including a Ford Film that was create as an advertisement. We also viewed a video by Peter Kirby about The ONWARD Project and a teaser piece inside our 3-D digital model from PaleoWest.

March, 2017

– The ONWARD Project Presents… Stepping Into The Landscape. A virtual reality demonstration with archaeologist Shawn Fehrenbach and VR designer Tamara Barylski of PaleoWest. Guests were able to learn about the experience and be part of it, by using the VR headsets after the presentation.

June, 2017

  • Summer Craft Show Fundraiser, attendees included people from the Sunset Park  neighborhood, Venice, Culver City and outer Los Angeles.
  • The ONWARD Project Presents… Differing Viewpoints, The ONWARD Project Slideshow with Elizabeth Kahn (President and CEO of The ONWARD Project) and Marydee Donnan (researcher for The ONWARD Project) and Lithuania Denetso (researcher and descendent of Littlesalt family).

October, 2017

– The ONWARD Project Presents… Annie Danis (PHD Candidate at UC Berkeley in Anthropology and Digital Humanities), Sensory Landscapes and The ONWARD Project.

December, 2017

– Holiday Artisan Boutique Fundraiser, attendees included people from the Sunset Park  neighborhood, Venice, Culver City and outer Los Angeles.

February, 2018

– The ONWARD Project Presents… James Snead (Professor of Archaeology at UC Northridge) discussing the “Forgotten Women” of Southwestern Archaeology.

March, 2018

– The ONWARD Project Presents… Jane Mi (UCLA Digital Humanities, Cultural and Land Artist).

May, 2018

  • The ONWARD Project Presents… Jeff Dean (Emeritus Director of the Tree Ring Lab at University of Arizona, Tucson): Discussing his research in dendrochronology (tree ring science) in the Expedition study area and surrounding sites.

July, 2018

– Fundraising Lunch and VR Demonstration with Eric Hanson of BluePlanet VR and xRez, and a Professor of Cinematography and New Media at USC.

August, 2018

  • Artist Residency collaboration between Hans Baumann, Santa Monica artist and The ONWARD Project through ArtCenter College of Design, Media Practices with 3 ArtCenter graduate students.
    • ArtCenter and The ONWARD Project workshop with Allison Fischer Olson, 3 ArtCenter students and Hans Baumann discussing and addressing the relationship with land from Navajo Nation consultant Ron Maldonado.
    • The ONWARD Project Board visits artist Hans Baumann and students to do a workshop on the ArtCenter project’s progress, including guests from various cultural institutions.
    • Two Day Journey Mapping Workshop with artist Hans Baumann and students working with the Los Angeles Navajo community to discuss storytelling and landscape.
    • Indigenous Autonomy: A Virtual Frontier for Southwest Sovereigns Exhibition Opening
    • ArtCenter College of Design, Media Design Practices: 2018 Summer Research Roundup. Installations and conversations between with Hans Baumann, The ONWARD Project and faculty and outside guests discussing Indigenous Autonomy.

September, 2018

  • The ONWARD Project Presents… Phil Garaway (Indigenous Art Collector and expert). Slideshow and Show and Tell: Navajo Textiles; One Hundred Years of Southwest History- The Fred Harvey Co. and The Hearst Collection (1830-1930).

December, 2018
